What you should Know.

So you have decided to take a few walking tours of the city. Let’s go over the basics first. You will need a few things to start off,: comfortable shoes, water, sunscreen and the ever faithful chapstick.

Las Vegas is stuck right in the middle of a large desert, which equates to warm and dry or cold and dry or comfortable and, yes, dry! With that in mind it is easy to experience dehydration. So be aware, you should drink as much water as needed. When you walk into a casino walk right up to any of the bars and simply ask for a glass of water, the bartenders realize that they have hidden the water faucets right next to the clocks and the windows. So if you go looking for one you might die of thirst before you find one.+

When walking around you might feel like walking the length of the strip. It’s enjoyable and there is plenty to see, what you have to realize is that those building on the end of Las Vegas Blvd. are huge, hence, they look real close. The distance at times seems unreal but it might be wise for you to know them.

From South to North in miles

Mandalay Bay to Tropicana - .8
Tropicana to Flamingo – 1.0
Flamingo to Treasure Island - .8
Treasure Island to Stardust - .5
Stardust to Riviera - .3
Riviera to Sahara - .6
Sahara to Stratosphere - .2

From the Stratosphere to the Mandalay bay is a little less than four miles, so if you’re thinking about setting up your workout regimen you’ve picked a good vacation destination.

What should you wear?
Las Vegas can be hot in the summer, but it’s a dry heat. Yeah, it’s hot regardless of how you describe it. The quandary you encounter is that when you get to a casino the temperature inside is usually that of an ice rink in Winnipeg. The huge difference in temperature calls for some creative clothing choices. I normally will endure the cold temperatures in the casino because I do not want to haul a sweater around in the sweltering heat. If you are bothered by extreme changes in temperature it wouldn’t hurt to take along a light jacket.

You should be aware that if you are visiting in the winter, while you might not get snowed on, you will experience some cold weather. You will be surprised to see the mercury dipping down low. It gets cold and if the winds pick up if feels colder.

Safety
Make sure you realize that there are a lot of cars traveling on the strip at any given time and most of these people are looking at everything around them. You know the Pyramids, Sphinx, Lake, Eiffel Tower and the Statue of liberty. I find that New Yorkers tend to dismay the traffic warnings the most. They figure they walk around Manhattan and get by okay, so they should be fine. Well, in Las Vegas people expect you to wait for the cross walk so they ignore you until then. That is exactly how accidents happen and invariably people get hurt. Just keep your eyes open when crossing the busy Las Vegas streets. The new pedestrian walkways that can be found on the busy intersections have dramatically reduced the potential dangers but they still exist.

Remember, walking in Vegas gives you some flexibility to walk into any casino at any time and put down your money and come out a winner. Drink plenty of water and go at it.
