What you should Know.
So you have decided to take a few walking tours of the city. Let’s go over the basics first. You will need a few things to start off,: comfortable shoes, water, sunscreen and the ever faithful chapstick.
Las Vegas is stuck right in the middle of a large desert, which equates to warm and dry or cold and dry or comfortable and, yes, dry! With that in mind it is easy to experience dehydration. So be aware, you should drink as much water as needed. When you walk into a casino walk right up to any of the bars and simply ask for a glass of water, the bartenders realize that they have hidden the water faucets right next to the clocks and the windows. So if you go looking for one you might die of thirst before you find one.+
When walking around you might feel like walking the length of the strip. It’s enjoyable and there is plenty to see, what you have to realize is that those building on the end of Las Vegas Blvd. are huge, hence, they look real close. The distance at times seems unreal but it might be wise for you to know them.
From South to North in miles
Mandalay Bay to Tropicana - .8
Tropicana to Flamingo – 1.0
Flamingo to Treasure Island - .8
Treasure Island to Stardust - .5
Stardust to Riviera - .3
Riviera to Sahara - .6
Sahara to Stratosphere - .2
From the Stratosphere to the Mandalay bay is a little less than four miles, so if you’re thinking about setting up your workout regimen you’ve picked a good vacation destination.
What should you wear?
Las Vegas can be hot in the summer, but it’s a dry heat. Yeah, it’s hot regardless of how you describe it. The quandary you encounter is that when you get to a casino the temperature inside is usually that of an ice rink in Winnipeg. The huge difference in temperature calls for some creative clothing choices. I normally will endure the cold temperatures in the casino because I do not want to haul a sweater around in the sweltering heat. If you are bothered by extreme changes in temperature it wouldn’t hurt to take along a light jacket.
You should be aware that if you are visiting in the winter, while you might not get snowed on, you will experience some cold weather. You will be surprised to see the mercury dipping down low. It gets cold and if the winds pick up if feels colder.
Safety
Make sure you realize that there are a lot of cars traveling on the strip at any given time and most of these people are looking at everything around them. You know the Pyramids, Sphinx, Lake, Eiffel Tower and the Statue of liberty. I find that New Yorkers tend to dismay the traffic warnings the most. They figure they walk around Manhattan and get by okay, so they should be fine. Well, in Las Vegas people expect you to wait for the cross walk so they ignore you until then. That is exactly how accidents happen and invariably people get hurt. Just keep your eyes open when crossing the busy Las Vegas streets. The new pedestrian walkways that can be found on the busy intersections have dramatically reduced the potential dangers but they still exist.
Remember, walking in Vegas gives you some flexibility to walk into any casino at any time and put down your money and come out a winner. Drink plenty of water and go at it.

So you want to party all night at the coolest joints in town? Looking to dance the night away? Vegas has some of the hippest, hottest clubs in the country and we can tell you which ones are the best.
Q: I want to get down and boogie to retro sounds. Where should I go?
A: You’re in luck. The ’70s and ’80s live on in Las Vegas. We like to swing by MGM’s Studio 54 early for a few throwbacks to days gone by and then head over to House of Blues, where a rotating crop of cover bands pump out the jams every Friday night. For the hippest of hip, the Beauty Bar features a retro happy hour on Friday nights.
Q: Are there any hip-hop or Latin clubs in Vegas?
A: Most clubs feature hip-hop among their mash-ups in their main rooms these days, and Latin music is becoming increasingly popular. One of the best places to salsa is Voodoo Lounge on Monday nights. On the Strip, Risqué features a Brazilian-themed night on Saturdays. If hip-hop’s your bag, don’t miss Poetry over at the Forum Shops — you’ll hear some of the latest jams and a few old favorites.
Q: Are there any underage clubs in Vegas?
A: Las Vegas isn’t called an “adult playground” for no reason. Here’s the deal, junior — most of the bars and clubs in Vegas are for the over-21 crowd, but most shows in Vegas welcome the underage set, with the exception of a couple of the more risqué productions. Check out some hip shows like Blue Man Group or Cirque du Soleil’s O or Mystere. If the cool concerts are your bag, the House of Blues hosts regular all-ages shows, but check with the box office before you go.
Q: I’m looking for a more stylish, upscale club. Where can I go?
A: Vegas has plenty of swank clubs for the swingin’ set. Our favorites are LAX, Tao,Tabú,ghostbar and Body English. The Bellagio’s luxurious The Bank andPrivé, inside Planet Hollywood, are two more hotspots that definitely spared no expense in their creation. Keep an eye out at all of them for some famous Hollywood faces.
Q: What’s an ultra-lounge? Is it a nightclub? Or is it a lounge? Help me out!
A: You’ve asked a good question. Many of these ultra-lounges, including Tabú and Risqué, are swanky bars with cover charges and a DJ. Some are free to enter before a certain hour. Some don’t open until late like any nightclub. Basically, an ultra-lounge is a club without the dance floor (or with a small one), where you can chat up that pretty face in a more intimate, relaxed environment.
Q: My friends are old-school ravers and love the sounds of house and electronica. Are there any clubs in Vegas that spin the deeper dance beats?
A: Have no fear. Aside from regular guest DJ appearances by the likes of Deep Dish and Bad Boy Bill at some of the biggest clubs in town, you can find regular house sounds at Empire Ballroom, JET (in one of the club’s three distinct rooms) and Tao. If you can handle the late, late night afterhours clubs, both Drai’s and Teatro have DJs spinning house till the sun rises (and after!).
Q: I’m looking to party all night and meet someone of the opposite sex. Can you help?
A: Are you kidding? You bet we can help. For some of the wildest action in Vegas, go to rumjungle. If you’re looking for the biggest and the hottest, try Rain or Jet. We’ve also noticed that Tao, inside the Venetian, seems to a favorite for both women and men, so whatever your preferred sex, you’re set.
Q: What’s the deal with the dress code at these night spots? Can I kick it old-school in my Dickies and Chuck Taylors?
A: Just like everything else in Vegas, there’s something for everyone. Most of the swankier clubs — that’s anything billing itself as an ultra-lounge, meta-club, mega-club, or anything that sounds expensive — have strict dress codes, especially for the men. The rules vary, but here’s the basics: No ball caps, tennis shoes, T-shirts, gang paraphernalia, overly baggy clothing, etc. A few clubs, like Stoney’s Rockin’ Country or Privé (which values cool factor over dressy, for the most part) might be a little looser depending on the time of night and the nature of the evening’s theme.
Q: Is there any way to avoid the lines at some of the hot clubs?
A: Aside from slipping the well-dressed gorilla at the door a crisp Benjamin Franklin? There sure is, and you’ve come to the right place. Just check out our featured nightclubs, and we can hook you up with VIP packages, line passes and more. It’s all about you, baby.

We have rustled up the top spots where you can shoot the breeze or dance up a storm.
Q: Where can I stay to be close to the gay scene?
A: If it’s proximity you’re after, you’ve got a few options. You can stay at the Hard Rock Hotel - it’s just across the street from the gay club loop. If spacious suites are your bag, the Alexis Park Resort is a short stroll from that loop. For variety, try the Sahara or Circus Circus. They’re both a short cab ride or a healthy walk to Commercial Center, another popular bar circuit. And if you’re looking for a resort that caters to the gay scene, we hear the Blue Moon is fabulous.
Q: What are the best gay clubs?
A:Gipsy is one of Vegas’ best dance clubs no matter what your persuasion, rivaled only by the massive Krave, the only “alternative” club on the Strip. They also tell us that Goodtimes and Free Zone are friendly, low-key spots. Plus, the scene is always kicking at Flex on the weekends. And we couldn’t not mention 8 1/2 and Piranha, which boasts a great crowd and great service.
Q: What shows/attractions should I see while I’m here?
A: Everything! But, for starters, check out An Evening at La Cage, it’s no drag. (Wait, yes it is.) Frank Marino and the boys are fabulous. If you like your acrobatics, music and dance colored with a healthy dose of uninhibited eroticism, then Zumanity should be right up your alley. Broadway-type show lovers should be pleased with imports like Mamma Mia! or Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular. And to get a behind-the-scenes look at Liberace, stop at the Liberace museum. We’ve never seen so many furs and rhinestones.
Q: What about bars and restaurants?
A: Good question - everyone needs to eat and drink every now and then. For dinner or a drink, Suede Restaurant & Lounge is not to be missed. Free Zone serves up dinner after 6 p.m., and the bar’s open 24 hours. There’s a variety of watering holes catering to different tastes, but some of the favorites are Buffalo,Backdoor Lounge and Spotlight. And word has it Ramrod offers top-notch drinks, music and gaming.

Three wise men from New York once claimed you have to “fight for your right to party.” In Vegas, the only fight you’ll have is trying to figure out what place to indulge yourself in.
Q: It’s my best friend’s 30th birthday and a group of girlfriends and I want to throw her a big bash. How do I do VEGAS right?
A: Luckily, you’ve come to the right place. Start by checking out the wild party atmosphere Coyote Ugly. The trademark sexy bartenders get up on the bar and dance, sing and encourage patrons to indulge in drinks. Of course, you can’t go wrong with “Chippendales The Show”. Voodoo Lounge,Tao, and Blush are all great choices to let your hair down and ring in your friend’s 30th in style.
Q: It’s my buddy’s big 21st birthday and my college friends and I are taking him on a birthday celebration, Vegas style. What are the hotspots to hit to ensure a great time?
A: Guys, if you’d like to, um, “get to know” some beautiful ladies a little bit more quickly, visit Sapphire or Scores. If you have late night munchies, try Mr. Lucky’s 24-7 Be sure to ask for the steak and shrimp special — it’s not on the menu. The Hard Rock’s Body English is also a hot late night spot for dancing and Forty Deuce is a great lounge.
If you and the crew want to attend a show, pull up a seat at “Fantasy” or “Crazy Girls.”
Q: It’s my husband’s 40th birthday, though sometimes he likes to pretend that he’s still 25. What should we do?
A: To help keep your husband in that state of denial, book him a tour at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway to drive a race car for a few hours. What about taking him to hit a few balls at one of Vegas’ many golf courses? Want to really make him feel like a Sin City stud? Let him browse the humidors at Cuba Libre inside the Hard Rock or have a drink with him and his stogie of choice at Napoleon’s inside Paris Las Vegas. And once your midlife-crisis-suffering husband has his cigar, why not hit one of our poker rooms and make the male fantasy complete? Speaking of male fantasies, don’t miss the Playboy Club at the Palms. After all that action, coax him into getting cleaned up at a swank barbershop such as Truefitt & Hill at the Forum Shops or The Art of Shaving at Mandalay Place inside Mandalay Bay.
Q: I want to surprise my wife with a weekend trip to Vegas for her birthday. Can you help me plan a birthday weekend?
A: Here are some tips for you to show your wife you love her. Give her a full day at the Rock Spa at The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. While she gets pampered, grab her some sweet gifts from Vosges Haut-Chocolat inside the Forum Shops. You likely can find plenty of other nice presents in one of the 160 specialty stores located there. Follow up with an elegantly romantic evening, which means you’re going to have to splurge some more. Start the evening off right — rent a limo. Though there are dozens of fine dining options to choose from, our choice of restaurant is Todd English’s Olives at the Bellagio. The patio overlooking the fountains is the epitome of romance. Follow dinner with the show “O,” which also is at the Bellagio. Continue the romance the following day with breakfast at The Verandah at the Four Seasons.

So you’re ditching the guys and heading to Vegas? Excellent move!
Q: I’m coming to Vegas with three of my girlfriends, and we’re looking to meet some guys just for fun. Where can we go to dance and drink with some good-looking men?
A:Pure at Caesars Palace, JET at Mirage and Tryst at Wynn Las Vegas should be at the top of your list. If you’re looking for a sophisticated, ultra-chic atmosphere, then Tao at Venetian is the place for you. And no girls’ trip to Vegas is complete without a visit to “American Storm,” “Chippendales” or “Thunder from Down Under.” Be sure to stop into the Flirt Lounge before and after the “Chippendales” show. The all-male wait staff, outfitted in the Chippendales fashion, has undergone special “chivalry training.” After the show, a number of Chippendales’ dancers stop by Flirt so you may be able to see your favorite performer up close.
Q: I just finalized my divorce, and a bunch of us are celebrating in Vegas. I want to have a good time, but not with a bunch of college kids. Where are the hot bars and clubs for a slightly more grown-up crowd?
A: First you gotta have a few drinks at Little Buddha at the Palms. For a little dancing, hit the House of Blues on Saturday for dance, top 40 and hip-hop. You could also try Studio 54 at MGM Grand; which usually draws a broad crowd. If you want to unleash your inner bombshell while you’re in Sin City, check out Stripper 101 at the V Theater, inside the Planet Hollywood hotel. For an intimate setting that’s perfect for late night conversation, why not stop by Peppermill’s Fireside Lounge ? If you truly want to escape the noise of the casino (and the booming music of a nightclub), the lounge located on the first floor of THEhotel provides a quiet, yet equally sophisticated atmosphere.
Q: What are fun, girly things to do in Vegas?
A: You and the girlfriends will definitely have fun splurging at places like the Fashion Show Mall, Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood or at Barneys New York at The Shoppes at the Palazzo. Craving something sweet? Then grab some cute and flavorful cupcakes with your girls at The Cupcakery. Located in Henderson on 9680 S. Eastern Ave., The Cupcakery is only a 10-15 minute drive from the Strip. Or, you can treat your hair to Happy Hour with a Hairtini at the Kim Vo Salon inside The Mirage. If you want to look super glam for the evening, visit the Swarovski crystal body art room at Qua Baths & Spa inside Caesars Palace. Shimmer all night with beautifully designed gems on your body.
Q: I’m coming to Vegas with my mom — just us girls. We want to see a show, eat at fancy restaurants and go shopping. What do you suggest?
A: Ah, Vegas is all about pampering. You’ll score serious points with Mom if you take her to see Mamma Mia! at Mandalay Bay — nothing beats ABBA. Spend a day shopping at either the Fashion Show or Miracle Mile Shops. Town Square is a great way to bond with mom by shopping, catching a movie or even having a picnic at the center’s own park. Forum Shops is another must on the shopping circuit. While you’re there, you and Mom can enjoy a leisurely lunch at Spago — it will give you a chance to refuel, people watch and plan your attack for the rest of your day. Enjoy one-on-one time with mom during a pampering pedicure at WET - The Spa at TI. Sit back and socialize on a long cushy bench while you’re both getting your feet done. If you truly want to escape the hustle-and-bustle of the city, spend the day within the pleasant and peaceful atmosphere of MonteLago Village at Lake Las Vegas — it’s well worth the drive. Stop by Bistro Zinc and enjoy a light lunch with some pastries while enjoying a view of the lake. After this vacation with Mom, she’ll write you back into her will.

So you want to win her over with a romantic Las Vegas trip. We like your style.
Q: Where can I find sweets for my sweetie in Vegas?
A: When we want to impress the ladies with some sweets, we make a stop at the Ethel M Chocolate factory. If you can’t make it out that far, you’ll find Ethel M Chocolates for sale at the Showcase Mall, the Fashion Show mall and various hotels in town. At the Mandalay Place boutique shops, the Chocolate Swan has a selection of cocoa goodness for more refined tastes. And what could be better than a shop that has a freestanding fountain of flowing chocolate? Jean Philippe Pâtisserie not only offers amazing chocolates, but you’ll also find a variety of delectable pastries and other goodies. Who can go wrong with Godiva Chocolatier? There are boutiques located in Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood and the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian, among other hotels and malls. If she’s into the high-end chocolate, make sure to make a trip to Caesars Palace and check out Payard Pâtisserie & Bistro and Vosges Haut-Chocolat.
Q: Where is the most romantic view in Vegas?
A: We have a couple of contenders for this title — the observation deck of the Stratosphere Tower and the view of the Bellagio fountains from the Eiffel Tower at Paris. There also are a number of restaurants at Bellagio offering a fantastic view of the fountains, including Prime and Jasmine. The House of Blues Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay features an exclusive balcony, but unless you have a membership, Monday night is the only time this members-only club is open to the public. If sharing your view with hundreds of other lovers fits your concept of romance, you might enjoy the views from Mix at THEhotel, the VooDoo Lounge & Cafe at the top of the Rio or ghostbar or Moon at the top of the Palms.
Q: What romantic restaurants would you recommend?
A: Now you’re talking. Mon Ami Gabi at Paris incorporates a view of those fab Bellagio fountains with an authentic Paris outdoor café setting. Though there is a location inside the Monte Carlo casino, try the downtown location of André’s, a rustic and friendly Vegas original. More romantic eateries with great views include Alizé or Nove Italiano at the Palms and Top of the World at the Stratosphere. Mix, atop THEhotel at Mandalay Bay, offers amazing views of the Strip and you can get a romantic table on the outdoor balcony. If your love knows no financial limit, visit Fleur de Lys at Mandalay Bay, with its wall of fresh flowers and exquisite cuisine that should not be missed. The Capital Grille, located on the third floor of the Fashion Show mall, also caters to more expensive palates.
Q: Besides eating and looking at nice views, what else can we do that’s romantic?
A: Very few places are more romantic than Lake Las Vegas, where you can take your sweetie on a moonlit dinner cruise on the gondolas — there are even champagne and chocolate packages available. For something closer to the Strip, check out the Gondola Ride at the Venetian. Maybe a couples massage is what you need to get in the mood. Check our spas page — most of these places offer some sort of package for pairs. For something romantic and adventurous, treat yourself and your honey to the Rasul Ceremony for Two at Venetian’s Canyon Ranch SpaClub or the Pittura Festa at the Platinum’s WELL Spa.
If you visit in the colder months, nothing says “romance” like a horse-drawn carriage ride through the snow at the Mount Charleston Lodge. You can also rent one of the cabins and cozy up with your sweetie by the fireplace.
Q: We’d love to get married in Vegas, where do you recommend?
A: Ah, here in Vegas, we’ve got something for everyone when it comes to tying the knot. If you want to get married by Elvis, (and really, who doesn’t?) check out the Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel. If you’re looking more for a themed wedding, you’d love the Las Vegas Hilton, Caesars Palace or Treasure Island. If you’d like a more elegant affair, you’d love the chapels at Bellagio, Paris or the Venetian. Of course, the number of choices when it comes to wedding chapels in Vegas is almost endless, so check out our chapels and hotel chapels pages for listings of the most popular. But if you want to get above all the hustle and bustle of the Strip, opt for a romantic champagne helicopter wedding, offered by Maverick Tours.

Wondering whether bringing the kids to Vegas is a good idea? Don’t worry, Vegas has something for everyone.
Q: My teenage nephew and a couple of his friends are coming to Vegas and are athletic/outdoorsy types. What do you recommend?
A: That’s why we love Vegas. Not so far from the adult playground of the Strip are some very amazing natural wonders. Take them to Red Rock Canyon, Mount Charleston or the Valley of Fire for hiking or hit the sand dunes on one of our ATV tours. If you’re looking for some adventure, explore one of our tours of Lake Mead, the Grand Canyon or the Colorado River. The Springs Preserve houses entertainment, exhibits, galleries, trails and gardens that provide recreational and educational opportunities.
If it’s sporty activities you’re after, you also might want to hit the rock-climbing wall at GameWorks or try Flyaway Indoor Skydiving. If you’re coming during the summer, you can’t beat the pool at your hotel for the best place to cool off.
Q: We’re bringing our teenagers to Vegas. What fun things can they do that won’t bore them to tears?
A: In Vegas, we don’t do “boring.” We’ve got GameWorks, which we hear even keeps the adults entertained. Also, many hotels have arcades full of the latest video games. If they like the thrill rides, take them over to Speed at the Sahara, The Roller Coaster at New York - New York and the Stratosphere, which has several scary rides including the famed Big Shot. They may have tears afterward, but it won’t be from boredom. There are even more rides over at Circus Circus’ Adventuredome, and if your kids are into science fiction, you can’t miss the Star Trek: Borg 4D and Star Trek: The Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton. If you’re still feeling the need for speed, why not channel your kids’ inner race car driver at Pole Position Raceway or the Las Vegas Mini Gran Prix ?
If scary rides aren’t your thing, how about scary animals? Take the kids to see the kings of the jungle at the Lion Habitat at MGM Grand, the Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at Mirage or the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay. And finally, if they can handle seeing real-life organs and skeletons on display, Bodies…The Exhibition would be perfect.
So the kids were hoping to see Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt while they’re in Vegas? You might get lucky and see the real thing, but if you don’t, just take them over to have their picture taken with the wax versions at Madame Tussauds. They’re so lifelike, the friends back at home will never know the difference.
Q: We’d like to take our kids to a show while in Vegas. Is there anything that both parents and kids will enjoy?
A: The ” Blue Man Group” or Cirque du Soleil’s “Mystère” and “KÀ” would be excellent choices for the whole family. There also is Lance Burton the magician, Nathan Burton Comedy Magic at the Flamingo and Steve Wyrick Real Magic at the Miracle Mile Shops. The “Tournament of Kings” dinner theater gives kids a place where they can eat with their hands. You also might want to take the aspiring star in your family to see the impersonators in “American Superstars” at the Stratosphere or Danny Gans at The Mirage. The V Theater in the Miracle Mile Shops has something for everyone: V- The Ultimate Variety Show provides a Smorgasbord of entertainment while teens especially will appreciate the way the performers in Toxic Audio make music out of bodily noises.
Q: My daughter and I love to shop. Where should we go?
A: Check out the Fashion Show Mall, the Forum Shops or Miracle Mile Shops. For some deals, you also can head over to the Las Vegas Outlet Center. Shoppers could easily spend the whole day at Town Square with its mix of retail shops and restaurants as well as a movie theater. If it’s more unusual wares you’re in the market for, check out our page on some unique stores in town.
Q: I know people under 21 aren’t allowed in clubs or casinos, but can my teenager go out anywhere on the Strip at night?
A: Sorry, but Clark County ordinances forbid anyone younger than 18 from being on the Strip after 9 p.m. on weekends and holidays without a parent.

Q:What hotels are worth visiting off the Strip?
A:So glad you asked. Good dining deals, gambling, and recreational activities are all available in off-the-Strip hotels. Here are a few of our favorites.
The Red Rock Resort and Spa is a great place to go for a little R&R. Red Rock Resort has a beautiful spa, a variety of casual and upscale dining options, an 87,000- square-foot casino and a tranquil pool. It also happens to be close to Red Rock Canyon.
Green Valley Ranch Resort in the heart of Green Valley / Henderson also has great dining options and great shopping options. Walk outside the casino and step into The District, a modern outdoor shopping mall complete with stores, restaurants and a Whole Foods Market.
Q: I want to do some recreational activities while I’m here, and I like adventure. What should I do?
A: If you like winter sports, head up to the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort and hit the slopes. Looking for some thrills in the water? Take one of our white-water rafting tours. If you prefer a vehicle for your adventure, try a Hummer, jeep or ATV tour. You can cruise through the desert and even explore a gold mine. If you feel the need for speed, don’t miss out on the chance to drive or ride in a race car at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Maybe a slower pace is more your style: Why not hop on a horse and ride off into the sunset? As you can see, there’s no shortage of recreational opportunities around Vegas. For more, just check out our recreation section.
Q: I’m looking for some interesting attractions near Vegas. What should I make sure to see/do?
A: Don’t miss Hoover Dam, one of the engineering marvels of the world. Explore it up close on one of our many tours.

The 4 to 7 a.m. period seems to be a great time to hit the casinos. You have your choice of machines or games, and more personalized attention from the staff. Also you get to see some of the more hard core Vegas characters. I distinctly remember two topless Vegas showgirls walking casually through the casino and sitting down at the bar, laughing and chatting and drinking like any two regular friends, except topless. Don’t know if they forgot they were topless, or just didn’t care. Funny part was that the handful of gamblers at that hour were so hard core and intense that most of them didn’t even look up.
